about

Even a fleeting moment’s listen to the Rex Complex’s latest album, A Delicious Victory, floods one’s mind with references. At times, the twangy guitar and edge-of-the-seat drumming seem to hail from a lost Tarrantino soundtrack; elsewhere the funky-Neanderthal beats coupled with creepy lyrics evoke Tom Waits. The sheer stylistic breadth of RC’s tunes and sonic palette—in addition to the usual rock band instruments they incorporate everything from plastic buckets to the West African balafon—not to mention their penchant for “progressive” lyrical content, could draw them comparisons to The Mothers of Invention. Still though, The Rex Complex is ultimately a 21st century band. While they pull, seemingly at will, from the massive amounts of musical information readily available these days, they never sound like Berklee kids trying on afros and dashikis. Instead, one is left with the distinct impression that The Rex Complex has created a noisy but always smart genre all of their own.
